Basic Text

This tutorial walks you through adding and formatting text within the editor of basic pages.

Tips, Tricks, and Helpful Hints:

  • When copying and pasting text from external sources to the site, always paste text using the ‘Paste as plain text’ option.
    • Forgetting to paste text as plain will copy over proprietary formatting which will cause your web page to appear differently in non-Microsoft browsers and computers and may cause other errors or security issues.
  • Double spacing is achieved by simply hitting Enter; whereas single spacing is achieved by pressing Shift + Enter
  • Need to check spelling?
    • Copy and paste your text into a word document to see if there are any spelling errors present.
  • Having issues or errors formatting or spacing your text correctly or using the editor as a whole?
    • Insure you have pasted the text as plain; if not this can cause formatting errors.
    • Make sure your browser is up to date with the most current version available.
    • Our CMS supports Firefox, Internet Explorer version 8+, and Chrome.

Other helpful formatting tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid underlining text that isn’t a link – Only links should be underlined.
  • Avoid unnecessary bolding or italicizing – Bolding of text on a page can help to draw attention to a statement, but should be reserved for titles, or occasional emphasis. Repeated use of this diminishes the impact and cake make a page look cluttered or sloppy.
  • Avoid overuse of Header styles – Try to use headers more for titles of sections and less for emphasis on certain sentences – as with the bolding, overuse will diminish the effect. Do not use heading styles on text that normally belongs in a paragraph or quote. If you want to draw attention to some text, simply bold or italicize it, within reason.
  • Do not use text characters (such as space, dash, underscore) for formatting – It may seem like a good idea to add spaces, dashes, etc. to add design styling, but these will be formatted differently in different browsers and will not look as you intended!
